Louisiana Prison Smuggling Plot Involved Cannon, Meth
Every morning, one of the first things I do is Google "Louisiana" just to see what's happening around the state. Today, I found what is quite possibly the most bizarre crime story that I've ever seen in the state of Louisiana - two men have been arrested in Grant Parish for attempting to smuggle drugs into a Louisiana prison.
On the surface, that seems like a pretty "normal" crime, right? Well, it's how they attempted to do it that is attention grabbing. These two attempted smuggle over $200,000 worth of contraband into the prison by launching it over the wall via a homemade cannon.
Cannon-Smuggling Plot at Louisiana Prison Uncovered
Unfortunately, it's pretty common for people to get arrested trying to smuggle various stuff into prison - weapons, drugs, tobacco, whatever. Heck, recently, we even had some folks get busted for using drones to try and drop contraband into prisons. But this is next level.
An investigation by the Grant Parish Sheriff's Office led to the arrests of two men - Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez. These two allegedly were attempting to smuggle roughly $112,000 worth of tobacco products and $89,500 worth of meth into a federal prison using a cannon. Yes, you read that right - a cannon.
According to police, their genius plan was to use a cannon built using compressed air to launch the contraband over the security fence at the prison. According to the Sheriff's Office, the cannon had a 'firing range' of over 350 feet.
Both men are facing pretty serious charges - they've both been arrested for attempting to introduce contraband into a penal intuition and distribution of methamphetamines. ICE is also involved as Munoz is allegedly in the US illegally.
Other Bizarre Contraband Stories
These two fellas aren't the only ones who have gone to absurd lengths to try and smuggle drugs into prison. As I mentioned above, recently some folks were arrested for using drones to smuggle drugs.
But there have people trying to smuggle illegal substances into prisons using footballs, chip bags, cold cuts, Uber Eats...all kinds of crazy stuff.
In a world where people often say "creativity is dying", criminals clearly are taking notes from old episodes of Looney Tunes to try and stay ahead of law enforcement.
