I've got to preface the next thing I write by telling you that I certainly sympathize with any friends or family of this man in their tragic loss.

The plight of the homeless in our country is real and I'd like to think that at some time, those days will be in our rear view mirror.

We All Know What Happens When You Assume

However, as I commit the cardinal sin of "assumption", one can only assume that drugs or alcohol was a player in this issue.

That said, of all the ways the Good Lord might call me home, I would pray that he'd find another way for me to make my exit than to fall asleep in a dumpster, only to be scooped up by a garbage truck and crushed to death.

It's Sad, But Apparently That's Exactly How It Happened

According to the Hammond Police Department, that is pretty much how it went down for Jermaine Watts, 42, of Hammond, as he was fatally crushed in the mechanical compactor of a garbage truck.

This guy is a shoe-in for the 2022 installment of the Darwin Awards. If you aren't familiar with this distinction, Wikipedia describes the Darwin Awards as:

The Darwin Awards are a tongue-in-cheek honor originating in Usenet newsgroup discussions around 1985. They recognize individuals who have supposedly contributed to human evolution by selecting themselves out of the gene pool by dying or becoming sterilized via their own actions.

An example of a previous Darwin Awards Winner is listed on onlinemasterscolleges.com, where they write:

Craig from Riverton in Utah decided that he’d try out a new, soft way of landing and splashdown in a canal. The first part went swimmingly, with Craig executing a perfect landing. Unfortunately, the swimming part didn’t go quite so well. Craig’s parachute filled with water dragged him downstream and drowned him.

I'm thinking our Hammond guy is a first round shoe-in for an award.

***Note to self for future reference, regardless of how cold you get, or how much you drink, there's always a better place to sleep it off than a dumpster.
