Beware of Sharks If You’re Going to the Beach this Summer

If you're a beach lover, you're probably ready to get some sand between your toes and the most popular destinations for folks from Louisiana are all along the beautiful coasts of Texas or Alabama. Sunscreen? Check. Flip-flops? Check. But wait, there's another item on the checklist: shark awareness!

Sharks have been making a splash along the Gulf shores over the last few years, and that's not just some fishy tale. They've been spotted cruising around the beaches of Alabama and Texas, and even taking a peek at what's happening off the coast of Louisiana.

Now, if you're thinking, "Surely, not Texas, right?" Well, think again! There are five beaches in Texas that sharks seem to fancy more than the rest. We're talking about Galveston Beach, South Padre Island, Mustang Island/Port Aransas, Surfside Beach, and Pirates Beach. And guess what? They're all hotspots for tourists! So, while you're enjoying the waves and soaking up the sun, keep those peepers peeled.

Believe it or not, Texas ranked sixth in the U.S. for unprovoked shark attacks with over forty encounters that have been documented! And just when you thought it couldn't get more jaw-dropping, check out this sighting of a whopping 10-foot Hammerhead shark that was spotted chilling in the shallows off San Luis Pass in Galveston, TX.

If that's not enough to get you to pay attention, check out this drone footage from the waters off the coast of Orange Beach in Alabama. And what does it capture? A shark so close to swimmers that it could have touched them!

Orange Beach, AL is a popular spot for vacationers, especially those from Louisiana. Interestingly, Alabama ranks 11th for shark attacks in the U.S., while neighboring Florida tops the list.

Between 2012 and 2021, there were 471 recorded shark bites in the U.S., resulting in 8 fatalities. Remember that staying aware is important, but there's no need to panic.

The Gulf of Mexico hosts 50 species of sharks, mostly small ones. Just a heads-up: June sees the highest shark activity. So, keep your eyes open and enjoy your beach time... if you dare! lol
