In case you didn't know, K-12 has been in the works for a while:

Martinez first revealed her plans for a new record and full-length film over two years ago.

In February, Martinez confirmed the album is ready but it's just taking a little longer than expected to finish the movie.

"Been dying to give you all an Album/Movie update but wanted to wait until I was sure the film would be done in time. The album has been done for like 2 years now I’ve just been waiting to finish up the movie," she wrote on Instagram.

When is Melanie Martinez dropping her new album, K-12?

The release date is September 6, 2019.

What can fans expect from K-12?

In 2017, Martinez told Billboard the movie is very important to the record it's a way for fans to follow along with the story. Based on the new trailer, it also appears as though it's a continuation of her 2015 debut album, Cry Baby.

“It’s all of the videos together of the next record, all thirteen, with dialogue and whatnot in between connecting all of them together. I’m directing it and writing it and styling it and doing the makeup,” she explained. “The film is really a huge priority of mine because it’s really important to me that people can truly understand the sentiment and the story when they hear the record for the first time, and I really want people to be able to follow along properly."

"I have such a clear vision in my head, but it’s always about the execution. I’m a perfectionist, and even if something comes out great, it’s still not perfect, you know?” she added.

What will K-12 sound like?

During a recent Q&A on Instagram, Martinez said the new album is "very different," "more polished" and "much more grown" than her previous album. She also described the film as "surrealist/ dark comedy/ musical."

In the same Q&A, the singer revealed the movie will be 1 hour and 30 minutes, there will be a tour to support K-12, and the album will all be dropped at the same time. She also confirmed tracklist will include 13 songs, but that she's not going to the names of the songs in case someone leaks the whole album.
