The New Mutants movie, based on the long-running X-Men spinoff comic, was shot way back in 2017, and originally due in theaters in 2018. Well, that year came and went. And 2019’s about half over too, and no New Mutants. After Disney acquired Fox, they re-slated the film for April of 2020. So what’s the hold up? These kids ain’t gonna be new mutants forever.

According to producer Simon Kinberg in an interview with Digital Spy, the big problem now is scheduling. The film’s cast — including Maisie Williams as Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton as Cannonball, and Blu Hunt as Mirage — is all busy with television shows, making it hard to have them all return for reshoots at the same time. As Kinberg explains:

For all of these movies, Marvel’s really brilliant at scheduling pick-ups into their budget and schedule so it’s all prepared, and we have never been that smart. For us, we’re always scrambling to get these actors back together so they’re all in the same place at the same time. It would seem simple on The New Mutants because they maybe not as big movie stars as the main X-Men movies, but all of them are on TV shows, so we’ve got to wait until they get off their shows and they can all be in the same place at the same time.

According to Kinberg, the scheduling kinks will finally be ironed out “some time this year” and The New Mutants will come out next year as scheduled — this time. That’s currently April 3, 2020.
