The Oakland Plantation was owned by a crazy man who committed one serious crime.

Travel down Sligo Road in Haughton and you’ll come across the Oakland Plantation. Built in 1830 by Dr. Abel Skannal and his wife, the house is as haunted as they come.

The Skannals lost several of their children at young ages in the house. The grief drove Dr. Skannal to blame his wife and one night he murdered her. He then stuffed her body into a coffin and kept it locked away in the attic. The body of Mrs. Skannal was discovered after Abel met his death.

Residents of the home can see the ghosts of small children playing in the halls and the shadow of Dr. Skannal sitting in his rocking chair. The thermostat in the house turns to zero at night.

Many believe it’s the doctor preserving the cold hard body of his once beloved wife.
