Two big announcements before the Shreveport City Council on Tuesday. Councilman and longtime community activist Willie Bradford Jr. says he is retiring and will step aside from his council seat effective Friday.

Bradford is in his 2nd term on the council. He urged his colleagues to continue to work together to do what is best for the entire community.

The council will now have to appoint an interim replacement for Bradford until an election can be held.

Following that announcement, Council Chairman James Flurry announced he has recently been diagnosed acute leukemia and he will be traveling to the Baylor Medical Center for treatment regularly. Fighting back tears, Flurry said he is not resigning from the council because "I intend on beating leukemia."

After that announcement, Councilman James Green led the Council in prayer for Flurry.
