Fresh off her acclaimed performance on NBC's live presentation of The Wiz, Queen Latifah has scored the starring role in Empire creator Lee Daniels' upcoming Fox series where she will play an Atlanta beauty salon owner who also does some singing.

Her character will act as a mentor to three girls who have singing aspirations of their own and pursue their dreams of making in in the Atlanta music industry.

But if you're thinking that this show, tentatively titled Star, will be an Empire spinoff, think again. "The possibility of a crossover at some point exists but it's definitely not what we're planning right now," said Fox chairman and CEO Dana Walden, who called Star "a wholly contained original series."

"It's a modern day music business in Atlanta and Empire is modern day music business in New York," said Walden. "It's not inconceivable that the two worlds could cross. But that's definitely not Lee's intention as we go into it."
