Rihanna Is Delivering Scholarships and Bikes to Malawian Girls [PHOTO]
Rihanna is continuing her charitable efforts to help impoverished girls get the proper education they need. According to Billboard, the pop superstar’s Clara Lionel Foundation has teamed up with bike-sharing service ofo to fund scholarships for girls in Malawi through the foundation’s Global Scholarship Program.
In addition to the scholarship, ofo will also donate bikes to students who have transportation issues in getting to class. The first batch of bikes have already arrived and been put into good use.
"I'm so happy about the Clara Lionel Foundation's new partnership with ofo because it will help so many young people around the world receive a quality education, and also help the young girls of Malawi get to school safely, cutting down those very long walks they make to and from school all alone," said Rihanna in a statement.
Rihanna's altruistic efforts comes at a great time as there are approximately 4.6 million students in primary school in Malawi, but only eight percent of students complete secondary school. Girls are disproportionately impacted, and transportation challenges is one of the main reasons why there are so many drop-outs. Thanks to ofo, now the girls have a way to get to school.
Rihanna has been a true champion in global education. Last month, the 29-year-old singer met with French President Emmanuel Macron to further discuss ways to fund her global education initiative.
This past June, RiRi released a documentary about her January trip to Malawi, where she met with government officials, educators and students as Ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education. You can watch that video below.
