Ryan Murphy Eyes Netflix ‘Politician’ With Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Barbra Streisand
We haven’t even seen Ryan Murphy’s first Netflix series, and already TV’s busiest producer has another in the works. Netflix has placed a two-season order for a new musical series with Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Barbra Streisand, dubbed The Politician.
Deadline first reported this Mad Lib of a TV news item, noting that only Dear Evan Hansen star Platt’s deal has officially closed. The new series is described as “a one-hour comedy with social commentary,” and may feature some musical elements. The only other available details are that The Politician “revolves around the politician aspirations of Platt’s Payton, a wealthy Santa Barbarian, and every season will revolve around a different political race his character is involved in.”
Murphy will direct the pilot episode (Streisand is said to be directing episodes as well), while The Politician counts as producers Glee alum Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Production is said to begin as early as this summer, though no word on whatever became of Murphy’s two-season order for Ratched, a One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest prequel starring Sarah Paulson as the title character.
Elsewhere, the Ryan Murphy TV takeover continues with American Crime Story, American Horror Story, 9-1-1, Feud and more. Stay tuned for the latest on The Politician as it emerges.
