‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Getting a (Very Dark) Reboot, But Who Should Play Sabrina?
The CW is scaring up another twist on a classic comic.
The network is creating a new one-hour drama based on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Variety reports.
This version being prepped for the 2018-2019 TV season, called The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will be a dark spinoff of the current CW series Riverdale, which features classic Archie characters caught in the middle of solving a brutal murder mystery.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina title comes from the 2014 Archie comic that was developed after Sabrina appeared in the comic book series Afterlife with Archie. Perhaps not so coincidentally, at one point Sabrina had even been set to appear on Riverdale.
However, Variety reports this potential Sabrina vehicle will be much different than what you'd expect:
The potential series would be based on the Archie Comics series 'Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,' which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The series is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like 'Rosemary’s Baby' and 'The Exorcist,' and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
This description is certainly a far cry from the nostalgic Sabrina most fans know: Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a light comedy starring Melissa Joan Hart, aired for seven seasons on ABC and The WB (now The CW) from 1996-2003.
