MAGNOLIA — Epic Records recording artist Sean Kingston will be the featured act for the 2011 spring concert at Southern Arkansas University. The event is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at the SAU track. Admission is free, and the public is invited to attend.
Kingston may be known best for his hit single “Beautiful Girls” which won the Teen Choice Award for Choice R&B Track in 2007. A vibrant fusion of pop, doo-wop, and reggae, characterized by Kingston’s airy island lilt and a sample of Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me,” “Beautiful Girls” made history as one of the fastest ascents up theBillboard Hot 100 charts ever, eventually climbing to No. 1, where it stayed put for three weeks. Three more Top 10 hits followed, “Me Love,” “Take You There,” and “There’s Nothin’.” Kingston sold more than six million digital singles and more than 4.5 million ringtones. In 2007, he opened for Gwen Stefani on her ‘Sweet Escape’ tour, Beyoncé on her ‘Beyoncé Experience’ tour, as well as Chris Brown in the U.S. and Kelly Clarkson in Australia.
Born in Florida, Kingston was raised in Jamaica. His grandfather was the noted Jamaican reggae producer Lawrence Lindo who worked under the name Jack Ruby. Kingston was discovered through MySpace and was soon signed to a record deal. His career has also led him to appearances on television shows on MTV, Nick Jr., the Disney Channel and international networks.
The spring concert series at SAU began during the University’s 2009 centennial celebration. Previous performers have included former SAU student and country music star Tracy Lawrence in 2009 and Eric Hutchison in 2010.
