Sean Payton Just Squashed Those Dallas Cowboys Rumors Once And For All
Saints head coach Sean Payton just squashed a major rumor once and for all.
For years one of the most annoying rumors surrounding the Saints and coach Payton was that once his time was up (or Brees retired) he would head to Dallas to coach the Cowboys. Last week during an interview on WWL radio Payton made it clear that he was "NOLA for life."
I’ve got fleur-de-lis tattoos that can’t be erased!
My morning show co-host, Chris Reed, is a well-documented die-hard Dallas Cowboys fan and I can't tell you how many times he has come to me—either excited, ribbing me, or both—every single time the rumor resurfaces.
I mean, I totally get it—Sean Payton has a history coaching in Dallas as well as a residence. It also doesn't help that the Cowboys haven't committed to current head coach Jason Garrett since he took the job in 2011 and this season he will be entering the final year of his contract.
The latest spark in the rumor mill came from a Fort Worth Star-Telegram report claiming that quarterback Teddy Bridgewater was in limbo because there wasn't a guarantee that Payton would stick around after Brees rode off into the sunset. Ultimately, Bridgewater would re-sign with the Saints on a one-year deal.
Payton told WWL the rumor was right on time.
I’m in my 13th year. I don’t know how to answer it. I feel like it’s every other year; it’s on the odd number years, so 2019 it comes up and then we’ll hear it in 2021.
Sean Payton says staying in New Orleans throughout his career is "clearly the plan" so Saints fans shouldn't expect to see him in Dallas (or anywhere else for that matter) anytime soon.
