Shreveport’s Diversity: What the New Study Reveals
Ethnic diversity is something of a controversial topic today, a founding ideal of America has become highly politicized by both sides. Some people accuse others of forcing ethnic diversity, while some people accuse others of avoiding and preventing ethnic diversity.
All of that to say a new study has found just how ethnically diverse cities like Shreveport are. This isn't a study aiming to paint a city as racist or xenophobic, just an observation of the literal facts about the diversity of a city's residents. Over 501 cities in America were looked into for this study, some have a much more diverse population than others.
Shreveport Has One of The Least Diverse Populations of Medium Cities
WalletHub's study of the most and least ethnically diverse cities separated all 501 cities into three categories based on the size of their population. Cities like New York City, NY; Oakland, CA; Orlando, FL; Boston, MA; and Houston, TX all fit in the Large City category.
Shreveport was one of 156 midsize cities, and ranked as the 21st least diverse, and out of all cities Shreveport was the 148th least diverse city.
Shreveport's lack of diversity is due to what the study refers to as "linguistic diversity" and "birthplace diversity" ranks. Linguistic diversity refers to how many people speak different languages, cities like San Jose, CA, have a very wide range of spoken languages.
Birthplace diversity is a bit more interesting, because it's not a measure of how many people form different ethnic background live in a city, but instead how many people living in a city were born in different places, including other states. In the whole state of Louisiana 77.13% of the population was born in the state, more state born residents than any other state.
