You may have seen her work on TV, in movies, or on the red carpet. If you have, you can thank a local designer named Jane Ryder.

Ms. Ryder died Thursday after a battle with cancer. The Exeter, England native was well-regarded for her work as a designer and seamstress, but was probably best known for making hats that were featured in magazines and on television, including one worn by Joan Rivers on an episode of Fashion Police.

“Jane was a force of nature,” said longtime friend Mary Thoma. “You knew when she entered a room. Whether her wicked laugh announced her presence, or hearing your name yelled from across the room with her signature expression of ‘bloody hell,’ you knew Jane was there.”

Jane Ryder is survived by two sons, a daughter and two granddaughters. There is no word yet on services.
