Speaker Johnson: Illegal Immigration ‘Lowest in Nearly 25 Years’
Speaker of the House Mike Johnson has been a close ally of the Trump administration through the President's second term, still taking moments to reflect on what the previous administration failed to do in the eyes of many. Going back to the Obama presidency, there was an ongoing crisis at the Mexican-American border as thousands of migrants attempted to force their way into the United States.
Biden's Border Crisis
During the 2024 election season the term "border crisis" was thrown around a lot in regards to illegal immigration into the U.S. Many on the more conservative side of American politics saw Biden as being weak on the border while people illegally continued to enter the country. Then President Joe Biden was not ignorant of the border, in 2023 he was authorized by the Supreme Court to put through legislation that anyone deemed a public safety threat or picked up by law enforcement at the border could be deported for such actions. Later in his presidency Biden passed an executive order that would automatically shut down the Border entirely if illegal crossings reached an average of 2,500 a day, which has yet to happen and caused a drop in illegal immigration numbers.
Though Biden's attempts did curb some illegal crossings there was a total of 7.2 million people total who had attempted to cross the border under Biden's administration.
Mike Johnson Takes Shots At Biden
Despite being out of office for some time now the previous President is still taking fire from the opposition, one being Speaker of the House Mike Johnson.
On Monday the Speaker posted on X, formerly Twitter, a video from Fox News which shows the drop in Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) encounters at the border from the Biden Presidency to the Trump Presidency. Johnson captioned the post saying "Joe Biden... insisted he wasn't able [to] take executive action to secure the border. President Trump showed us the TRUTH."
The video shows data from CBP which shows that in February of 2025, there were 8,326 border encounters with CBP, while in years previous the number exceeded 155,000. Speaker Johnson asserts this is the lowest number of border encounters the CBP has tallied in 25 years.
