Stargazers Invited to an Epic Sky Party in Shreveport
The Shreveport-Bossier Astronomical Society, Inc. is a non-profit, tax-exempt Louisiana corporation dedicated to the study of astronomy. Many Shreveport residents thought that the society was done with sky parties up until a Facebook post started circling Facebook.
The Shreveport Bossier Astronomical Society has invited the community to their October Skies Star Party. Stargazers are encouraged to show up at sunset on Saturday, October 12th. The party is free for all.
The Facebook post said: "What is the secret in the joy of the night sky? Thousands of shimmering stars evoke feelings of awe and wonder. There’s the unexplainable calmness and the sense that somehow we are connected to everything we see even though it is so incredibly far away. It seems there is a deep-rooted relationship between the stars above us and the foundations of what it is that makes us human. What is the secret of the night sky? Look up instead of down and realize we are all made of stardust…"
The members of the Shreveport-Bossier Astronomical Society are active in many fields of amateur astronomy, including astrophotography, variable star observation, occultation timing, astrometry, and the study of planets, star clusters, and nebula you will have some experts on deck ready to answer all of your questions.
The Society has been in continuous operation since 1959 and they built the Shreveport Observatory in 1964. In 1970 the Society donated the observatory to the Caddo Parish School Board.
