Soderbergh reteams with the writer of ‘The Informant!’ for another true-crime caper.

Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh and created by Scott Frank, Godless has been marketed by Netflix as a western series about a small town inhabited almost entirely by women who have to defend themselves against a vengeful outlaw. But the promotional materials — including trailers, posters and official stills — are entirely misleading, and if you settled in to watch Godless over the holiday weekend expecting the female-driven version of Deadwood, you were more than likely disappointed.

Netflix is officially in a western phase. Weeks after landing the Coen brothers for an ongoing series, Steven Soderbergh’s star-studded Godless western sets a November premiere with first photos of Jeff Daniels, Michelle Dockery and more.

Whatever hopes we had for The Knick Season 3 were hammered into its coffin like needles in Dr. Thackery, and Steven Soderbergh isn’t going to make it any easier. The series director now reveals that a particular aesthetic may have killed Season 3, which itself would have moved mid-century.

We’re still not entirely sure what to call the new female-fronted Ocean’s Eleven movie, but whatever it is, it’s assembling some seriously great talent. In addition to Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lawrence has been reportedly considering joining the lineup, while the latest name eyeing the sorta-sequel / Ocean’s-adjacent project is none other than the great Cate Blanchett — a name that would take this project from a curiosity to a must-see.

That ol’ grain of salt goes without saying (seriously, we need a better phrase) for the latest report regarding the female-centric Ocean’s 11 sequel / reboot. Jennifer Lawrence may be reuniting with Hunger Games director Gary Ross for the upcoming project, which is being produced by original Ocean’s trilogy director Steven Soderbergh.

Magic Mike was a movie about strippers trying to make ends meet in the midst of the Great Recession, the difficulty of modern romance, and the dangers of drug use. Magic Mike XXL is a movie about strippers stripping. And not a whole lot else.
