The 30 Largest Pay Raises Just Given By The City Of Shreveport

Earlier this month, the Shreveport City Council approved a 13% pay raise across the board for city employees. The final vote was a 5-2 vote to approve the increases. The only two Council members who voted against the raise were John Nickelson and Grayson Boucher.

The 13% raises will go into effect next month, and the new pay rates will be reflected on employees February 15th paychecks.

There was plenty of fighting over who should be getting raises, and how to pay for them. One of the original ideas was a pay raise for Police and Fire departments, but that was voted down at the Council level. After that, the 13% raise across the board gained steam.

There was also a lot of talk about a tiered system of pay raises. Where lower earning city employees would receive a higher percentage increase, while higher earning city employees would get a lower percentage rate increase. For example, city employees making less than $50,000 a year could get a 13% raise, while those making over $100,000 would get a 2.5% increase. That option was never broadly considered by the City Council.

There was also a thought that Department leadership would not take the raises, but that wasn't included either, and the City Administration has confirmed all city employees will get the 13% increase. Even those making more than $150,000 a year from the city.

So how many employees make that much from the City of Shreveport? More than you think. Based on information provided from the City of Shreveport through a Public Records Request, as of January 1st, 2022 there were 38 City of Shreveport employees who were making more than $100,000 a year. However, after the new raises go into effect in February, there could be over 70 city employees who will make more than $100,000 a year.

Some of the raises being given out by the city are actually higher than many city employees make in an entire year. According to salary data provided by the City of Shreveport, there are two city employees who will be getting raises that are worth more than the annual salaries of more than 50 city employees.
