On Wednesday night there was a shooting at a nightclub forty miles west of Los Angeles in a Thousand Oaks, California.  At the Borderline Bar and Grill people were gathered to celebrate college night when a gunman entered the bar and begin shooting. Thirteen people were killed about a dozen more were wounded.

Over the next few days we can expect multiple news reports about the shooter as people try to learn more about him and why he committed such a horrific act. I feel it is important to shine a spotlight on the heroes as well. As time goes on we may hear stories about the brave men and woman who tried to stop the shooter or save lives.

For now, we know of one such hero, Ventura County officer Sgt. Ron Helus. Helus was one of the 13 people who lost their lives. He was one of the first to respond to the scene and rushed inside to help. Sadly, Sgt. Helus was shot multiple times and died. He leaves behind a wife and son.

Sgt. Helus a 29-year veteran of the department will be remembered as a true hero for his actions in the line of duty.
