The Leftovers may have gotten the shortest shrift of HBO’s 2017 preview trailer, but who wants to let the mystery be? Sneak a new peek at the final season’s April 2017 premiere with a brand-new photo, and teases from creator Damon Lindelof about the “end of the world” Kevin Garvey and his father will find in Australia.

Entertainment Weekly shared the newest photo from the HBO drama’s third and final season, featuring Kevin (Justin Theroux) and his father (Scott Glenn) taking in the horizon of Australia. According to the report, Kevin only intends on a brief visit down under (with only some of the cast coming along) but ends up pulled into his father’s “rather unexpected situation,” Godfather-style.

So why Australia, even as Season 2 layered in hints to a messianic figure seemingly arising on the continent? Says Lindelof:

Australia is the end of the world geographically and our show is about the end-of-the-world emotionally. And there’s also something about Australian cinema — it’s primal, ancient and spiritual — that felt like it fit The Leftovers, whether it’s Mad Max movies or Walkabout, or Waking Fright or Peter Weir movies.

And while Lindelof still isn’t promising any major answers to the mysteries permeating the series, The Leftovers Season 3 will at least reflect a building climax for its characters:

Though there are some big crazy ideas in the third-and-final season, we wanted to feel like we were building toward something conclusive. I wanted to take full advantage of the fact that when the audience watches the first episode of season 3 that they know it’s the beginning of the end. You don’t want to feel like an epilogue, but a climax.

Meanwhile, The Leftovers Season 3 will take the spring slot vacated by Game of Thrones, with Birdman and Alice: Through the Looking Glass star Lindsay Duncan joining the cast in an unspecified role. Near of the entire Season 2 cast has been confirmed to return for the final year, while the series has also released its first photos from the final season.

The Leftovers Season 3 may not deliver more footage until 2017, but what do we make of the trip to Australia?
