‘The Magnificent Seven’ Trailer: Justice Has a Number
The original 1960 John Sturges film is a classic, as is the film that influenced it, Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai. Will this new reboot of The Magnificent Seven be as good as either one of those films? Unlikely, but based on this new trailer, Antoine Fuqua’s update looks like enough fun in its own right.
The trailer for the film leans hard on Denzel Washington being cool and Chris Pratt being charming (there’s actually a *ding!* sound effect when he winks) and your mileage may vary depending on how susceptible you are to each man’s swagger. Whether the entire film is as action-heavy as this trailer also remains to be seen, but at least Fuqua knows how to stage a solid action sequence.
This new Magnificent Seven is not a direct remake of the 1960 film though the general plot specifics remain the same:
With the town of Rose Creek under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (Peter Sarsgaard), the desperate townspeople employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns – Sam Chisolm (Denzel Washington), Josh Farraday (Chris Pratt), Goodnight Robicheaux (Ethan Hawke), Jack Horne (Vincent D’Onofrio), Billy Rocks (Byung-Hun Lee), Vasquez (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), and Red Harvest (Martin Sensmeier). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money.
The Magnificent Seven opens in theaters on September 23.
