On occasion I run across a child who was apparently not taught the Southern values that most of us deeply cherish. They were never instructed to not address an adult by their first name. That adult is Mr. or Mrs. That same adult who asks a question of that child should hear the response, "Yes sir" or "No mam."

However, I've seen that tradition slowly erode, but it still makes my ears perk when I hear it happen. However, that's not even one of the top rude behaviors listed in a national survey that lists social etiquette rules that all should know.

What did make the list were things like:

  • Say "Please" and "Thank You."
  •  Step outside to answer phone calls
  • Use your turn signals
  • Smile
  • Hold the door for the person behind you
  • Look at the person speaking to you
  • Be on time (my personal biggest pet peeve)
  • Don't bring your smelly leftovers to work
  • Stay home when you're sick

When we opened up the discussion this morning inquiring about people's rude behavior that drives us nuts, the phone lit up like a Christmas tree.

We received comments like:

"Hey! I have something about being rude! I have a neighbor who has a small dog that poops in my front yard!! I asked my neighbor to find another poop spot and she cussed me out!"

What gets me most is that no one says "Excuse me" or "Thank you"  any more

Callers complained of people who won't acknowledge with a quick wave or smile when someone allows them to merge into traffic and those who constantly interrupt others when speaking. And let's not even go near the rude acts that people commit in public restrooms.

Let's just all agree that it's time to start fixing these issues and instruct our children in the proper ways to conduct themselves. I mean, we are still here in the South aren't we?
