Here’s Why The Weeknd Didn’t Show Up to 2017 MTV Video Music Awards
The Weeknd has always been a mystery wrapped in an enigma. The Toronto singer was set to perform at the 2017 Video Music Awards and was nominated for five awards including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Best Art Direction, Best Editing and Best Direction. Unfortunately, he was a no-show.
Luckily, there is an answer to why Abel couldn't make it. According to TMZ, The Weeknd didn't show up to the 2017 MTV VMAs for a very simple reason. He didn't feel like it. Apparently The Weeknd seemed fatigued from his touring schedule.
August has been a trying month for Abel. On Aug. 25, one of The Weeknd's private shows put on in partnership with Grey Goose vodka was shut down. According to an email released by Grey Goose, certain issues prevented the show from going on. “Due to unforeseen production issues, tonight’s event has been canceled. That said, Grey Goose and The Weeknd will be back together soon – bigger and better!” the email read.
However, everything isn't negative for the XO leader. In early August, it was announced that his album, Beauty Behind the Madness, had notched 100 consecutive weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. With the success of Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy, a missed performance or two won't exactly hurt one of the biggest pop stars in the game.
Even without The Weeknd, hip-hop showed out at the VMAs. Kendrick Lamar had a blazing performance of "DNA." and "HUMBLE" and Cardi B killed it at the VMA pre-show with "Bodak Yellow."
