Here we are in June, and you know what that means!  Yes, summer is almost here and kids are already out of school. But, I was talking about one of the other "gifts" we receive this month - hurricane season!

After last year's record season (we had 4 named storms slam into the state, in case you forgot - one of which was still a hurricane when it got to Shreveport), we are all a little gun-shy of dipping our toes back into that water.  That being said, mother nature is more of a "ready-or-not" kind of gal when it comes to these massive, swirling storms that rage out of the tropics every summer.  So, the question now is: How bad will it be in 2021?

According to the report from KATC, it's going to be eventful.  In an interview with  research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University Dr. Phil Klotzbach, the longtime weather pro claimed that we could likely see 17 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major storms.  When you compare that to the crazy 2020 season, it's relatively tame.  According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA), last year in the Atlantic we had 30 named storms, of which 13 became hurricanes, and 6 of those became major hurricanes.

Don't let the "lighter" hurricane forecast fool you, though.  Not only are meteorologists and weather experts not batting a thousand when it comes to predicting this kind of stuff - it only takes one Katrina or Harvey to cause a massive amount of property damage and loss of life.  Experts say that even though the worst of the season usually rears its ugly head in August, now is a great time to check your Hurricane kits and emergency plans.  Might be a good time to start sweet-talking your relatives a little further inland.
