April 23rd is National Lost Pet Awareness Day, but what should you actually do if you find a lost pet?

You've probably seen a dog wandering along the road and wanted to stop and help it out or try to find it's owners, but you might not have known how to go about capturing the dog or even what to do once you get it out of harms way. According to American Humane, there are 5 things you can do to help any lost pet you see get reunited with it's owner.

  1. Capture and contain it with care
  2. Call the authorities
  3. Check for ID
  4. Get the pet scanned for a microchip
  5. Take pets with no ID to an animal shelter

If you have pets of your own you know how scary it would be if they went missing, so make sure that your animals are microchipped and have ID tags on them.
