Why is Everyone Putting Food Out With the Mail on Saturday?
This Saturday, a lot canned food and non-perishable food donations will be set out with the mail. Once a year, the U.S. Postal Service teams up with local organizations and food charities for Stamp Out Hunger. This year marks the 27th anniversary of this incredible food drive organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers. This genius plan makes it so easy to donate and make a difference for the families across the country that may be struggling to put a meal on the table.
Participating is easy. Get a bag of non-perishable food (canned food, dry foods, etc) and set it in or by your mailbox this Saturday, May 11th. The same postal delivery person that brings your bills, birthday cards from grandma, and Ipsy bags will also pick up your donation and take it to the Northwest Louisiana Food Bank. From there, all of the donated eats will be sent out to over 150 different charities and organizations fighting hunger in our area.
What's more amazing is the fact that this isn't a local thing. Sure, the food collected here helps people in need here - but the campaign is the largest, single-day, food donation event in the entire country! The hard working men and women of the USPS will be picking up donations in over 10,000 cities across all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam! If you have any questions, call your local post office. If you'd like to volunteer to help with this massive operation, the food bank would love to have your help - call them at 318-675-2400.
