Why Is TikTok Being Sued by Louisiana Now?
Early this year, the famous app TikTok was almost forced off of American app stores due to the company's Chinese ties. However, that was put on pause, and TikTok remains on cell phones all over Louisiana.
In all of the stir about TikTok possibly being removed from the app store earlier this year, another story went under the radar for many, that being Louisiana trying to get TikTok in a courtroom.
Louisiana Sues TikTok Over Youth Addiction in Lawsuit
In early October of 2024, Liz Murrill the Attorney General of Louisiana filed a lawsuit against the TikTok company on allegations that the company violated consumer protection laws, specifically targeting youth with additive scrolling loops. Louisiana isn't alone in taking legal action against the Chinese entertainment company as at least a dozen other states launched their lawsuit after a national investigation was launched to prove TikTok's effect on children and teens.
That lawsuit has gone on to be used a proof that TikTok is deliberaltley desgined as addictive, specfically in how it targtet's kids.
TikTok Tries to Move Lawsuit From Louisiana
TikTok is now one step closer to facing the heat in Louisiana as they appeared in court to argue that the lawsuit should be thrown out from the 21st Judicial District Court of Louisiana as they belive the case does not have reason to be tried in Louisiana. The Attorney General's response to TikTok's argument was swift to point out to the Court that TikTok is facing a similar lawsuit in several other states and has attempted to make the same argument in each of those states, and only one of those states ruled in favor of their argument (only to reverse the appeal later).
The Judge has yet to decide on the appeal but following other state's example it is safe to assume Louisiana will carry out the lawsuit in state.
