Woman Pulled from Duck Pond Has Died

A woman who was pulled from the duck pond with severe burns has died.

It happened just before 6pm Thursday night when residents nearby saw the woman splashing around in the water. They had no clue why she was in the pond.

Nic Billiot and her brother Lee Banitky quickly realized something was wrong.
They called out to her several times and she did not respond. They could see smoke and smell the burning, but there were no flames when they ran outside to help. When the woman flipped over face down in the water, both Nic and Lee jumped in to pull her to safety in an attempt to save her life. She was rushed to Ocshner LSU Health but KEEL News has learned the woman died over the weekend.

This happened on the duck pond near Shreveport Barksdale Highway. Officials believe the woman was living in a homeless encampment in the area.

The woman suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 90% of her body.

We got this preliminary info from SPD:

Just before 6pm officers responded to the 1000 block of East Kings at the Duck Pond on reports of a woman in the water. Bystanders pulled her out. Officer arrived and observed burns to her body. She was transported to Ochsner LSU Health with life threatening injuries. Preliminary investigation suggests no foul play however the matter is still under investigation by SPD and SFD.

KEEL News spoke with both Nic and Lee about their heroic actions to get the woman to the shore and call for help.

First responders arrived on the scene to discover a woman suffering burn injuries to her body. She was transported to Ochsner Health Hospital to be treated for her injuries. Her injuries are considered life-threatening injuries.

Detectives from Shreveport Police Department and Fire Investigators from Shreveport Fire Department are investigating. The woman's name has not been released.
