Young Thug Arrested for Felony Drug Charges in Georgia
Young Thug appears to have turned himself in to DeKalb County authorities in Georgia after a felony warrant was issued for his arrest. Today (Sept. 11), jail documents show he was booked around 2:30 p.m. on five counts of violating the state's controlled substance act. He's currently in the custody of the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.
The arrest warrant was issued just yesterday, and it was revealed last week that the Atlanta rapper was wanted on eight felony charges related to the charges of possession and intent to distribute meth, hydrocodone and weed. He was also charged with two counts of codeine possession and possession of amphetamine, Alprazolam (Xanax) and a firearm.
It looks like Thugger, born Jeffery Lamar Williams, may have headed back home to Georgia when he caught wind of the warrant, as unhappy fans reported on Twitter that he was a no-show at the J. Cole KOD concert in Denver, Colo. last night, on which he is a guest artist.
The charges stem from Young Thug's arrest over a year ago in Brookhaven, Ga. when he was pulled over for an illegally tinted window. Police then reportedly discovered 2.5 ounces of marijuana, $50,000 in cash and a medley of other drugs.
In the state of Georgia, possession of more than one ounce of marijuana carries a mandatory sentence of one year in jail, and up to ten years in prison, so it's very possible that Thug could serve serious time if convicted for the charges he's currently facing.
Many are expressing their support for Young Thug, including his longtime friend and mix engineer Alex Tumay, who wrote on his Instagram story about the situation. "We see all the support for Jeff," he said. "Free him."
On his own Instagram account today, Thugger teased the features for his forthcoming project On the Rvn. "While I’m down... “ON THE RVN,” he wrote.
At this time, it's unclear when or if Young Thug will be released. An invalid date is set for his release date and no bond has been set on the charges. XXL has reached out to the DeKalb County District Attorney's office for further information.
