Comedian Amy Schumer teamed up with her cousin, Sen. Chuck Schumer, to address the issue of gun violence at a press conference in New York.

Amy Schumer's current movie, Trainwreck, was playing at a Lafayette, La theater when a gunman opened fire, killing two and injuring nine, before turning the gun on himself.

"I'm not sure why this man chose my movie to end those two lives and injure nine others, but it was very personal for me," Amy said. "We always find out how the shooter got their gun and it's always something that never should have happened in the first place."

Senator Chuck Schumer presented a plan for new legislation that will create financial rewards for states that the appropriate paperwork to the background check system, and penalties for states that do not.

The Schumers also requested that the Department of Justice to write a report comparing all states' standards for involuntary mental health commitment, and for Congress to fund mental and substance abuse to treat those who need it most.
