Marvel announced Thursday that Benedict Cumberbatch has been chosen to star in their upcoming "Dr. Strange", set for release Nov. 4, 2016.

"Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity," producer Kevin Feige said. "In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."

There's been lots of secrecy surrounding the film, directed by Scott Derrickson and written by Jon Spaihts. And there was plenty of speculation as to who would play the title character after production of the film was announced. Other actors who were considered include Joaquin Phoenix, Tom Hardy and Jared Leto.

"Dr. Strange", created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1963, is the story of neurosurgeon Stephen Strange, who covers all corners of the Earth in search of a cure to restore his hands after a freak accident.
