The I-49 interchange with I-220 opens officially today. Governor John Bel Edwards and several other dignitaries will be on hand to cut the ribbon and open that massive interchange to traffic.

KEEL News caught up with Dr. Shawn Wilson to talk about how important this project is for Shreveport Bossier.

The interchange at 220 cost about $240 million dollars and took about four years to complete. This will likely be the final stage of I-49 done in our community for many years because funding for the Innercity Connector through Allendale is not yet available and the Federal Highway Administration is continuing the environmental study on this route.

Dr. Wilson says he has to prioritize the projects across the state and several other projects are in line before we can get to the Innercity Connector stretch of the highway.

He says the I-20 exit to Barksdale is now on the fast track. He says we also have to deal with the Jimmie Davis Bridge. And he says regular maintenance on the highways is also a priority.
