I'll be honest with you, this one is hard to write.

It certainly hit home for me as I have two daughters of my own. My oldest daughter was born with a heart condition, but thankfully, she is perfectly healthy today.

It's hard to imagine what my life would be like today if we didn't have her. I actually asked a co-worker to write this for me, because I didn't think I could get through it.

I wanted to share a brief story though in regards to my daughter that I pray helps this family and anyone else going through something like this.

River, my hilarious three-year-old, was born with a ventricular septal defect. Basically a murmur that demanded instant attention. She had two holes in her heart that made it extremely difficult to eat, breath, and gain weight. We had known about her VSD since she was born, and visited countless doctors in order to get a grasp on how to treat it without surgery. After several months, our doctor informed us that one hole was simply too large to heal on it's own, and that we would have heart surgery whenever River was ready. He out her on medication that would essentially get us to the point where her body could handle heart surgery. Every two weeks, we would go see the doctor. Maybe it's the Christian in me or the optimist in me (or maybe both) because I would always go in knowing the doctor would give me miraculous news. Each time we would leave disappointing, but not discouraged. We kept praying and kept believing that her heart would heal without surgery. When she was six-months-old, we went in for a normal visit. I jokingly asked the doctor if we could get an ultrasound on her heart because I had noticed some real improvements. He laughed at me, as he often did when I was overly-optimistic, and said that this was just a routine checkup and that an ultrasound was certainly not needed. He then checked her heart with his stethoscope, and a sincere look of shock was plastered on his 65-year-old face. Without saying a word, he left the room. He came back within seconds and told us to bring River to the ultrasound room. We had no clue if it was good news or badHe and several doctors crowded around the screen and gasped collectively as he showed her heart. He told us that her heart had healed completely and that he had never seen anything like it.

Megan Scott messaged me this morning and it absolutely shattered my heart. River did not go through a situation any where near what Megan's son, Alex, is battling right now. He was born with the umbilical cord wrapped tightly around his neck, and has been fighting ever since. I have seen a medical miracle up close, and can say that all things are possible. I'm praying for Alex and his family. I can't imagine what it's like to go through this and wish I could help more. Megan and Caleb (father) are facing the decision now to take baby Alex off of life support. I believe they are consulting with a doctor today. Please say a prayer for Alex as he continues his battle.

They have a GoFundMe page where you can read Alex's entire story, and donate if possible. That page can be reached by clicking HERE.
