Gotye Clears Up ‘Glee’ Criticism

Remember how Gotye called the ‘Glee‘ cover of his hit song “dinky?” The Australian singer-songwriter is backpedaling rather quickly from his comments, even throwing in some self deprecating remarks for good measure. What does the ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ singer have to say now?

“The nature of using reverb and space in a recording can change your perception of how a sound appeals to you.” Uh, okay. So how does that pertain to Darren Criss and the beautiful Matt Bomer’s cover being “dinky” and “wrong?” Gotye, real name Wouter (Wally) De Backer explained, “This xylophone hook in my song — it’s kind of dinky not just in the cover version but the original song.”

So what about it being “wrong” and sounding like “it’s playing to you from a cardboard box?” Gotye also said, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop ‘Glee’ style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense.” He conveniently forgot those parts of his original comment when offering his quasi mea culpa for the digs.

We think he may be apologetic and complimentary now because the show’s use of the song helped it skyrocket to No. 1 on the singles chart.

Gotye amusingly added that the media has a habit of twisting words and taking things out of context. “That becomes the ‘Glee’ cover I hated and Darren Criss is an a–hole.” Billboard reports that Gotye actually complimented the Fox hit’s interpretation of the track. “I thought it was really clever to transpose the song to two guys …  it was a great idea.”
