Just in case you ever wondered if animals really feel emotion, read this story and watch the video.

Raju the elephant was captured as a baby 50 years ago, and since then his life has been a living hell, having to endure beatings, being forced to beg and eat plastic off the streets of India.

But in a daring midnight rescue operation last week, London-based charity Wildlife SOS finally freed Raju, finishing just before midnight July 4, Independence Day. The team reportedly saw tears streaming from the elephant's eyes as he was being rescued.

Pooja Binepal, U.K. spokesperson for the charity, said, ‘Raju has spent the past 50 years living a pitiful existence in chains 24 hours a day, an act of intolerable cruelty.

‘The team were astounded to see tears roll down his face during the rescue.

‘It was so incredibly emotional for all of us. We knew in our hearts he realised he was being freed.’
