Going to the hospital just got more expensive. The Shreveport City Council has approved a new ordinance that increases the cost of an ambulance ride. A ride will now run you 20 dollars a mile with a minimum charge of 900 dollars. The Shreveport Fire Department supported the increase as a way to help pay for the rising cost of emergency services.

The City of Shreveport does have an EMS insurance plan of sorts. You pay $35 dollars a year and you won't be charged for ambulance rides. Your insurance will be charged, but you won't be out of pocket any more money.
One of our listeners tells us the reason for the increase is because Medicaid only pays about $335 for an ambulance ride. So the other users have to pay more to subsidize the costs.  Find out more here.
