Shannon Lamb, who allegedly gunned down a college instructor and his domestic partner, was found dead late Monday of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to Delta State University police chief Lynn Buford, Lamb's 2015 Dodge Avenger was spotted by police on Mississippi Highway 1 Monday night. A pursuit then ensued, with Lamb bailing out of the car and running into the woods.

During the chase, a gunshot was heard, and Lamb was found shortly afterward. He was transferred to a Greenville hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lamb was accused of murdering Delta State University professor Ethan Schmidt in his on-campus office Monday morning, and then later killing 41-year-old Amy Prentiss, with whom Lamb was romantically involved, according to Gauthier Police Detective Matt Hoggatt.

The motive for the shootings is unknown at this time.

The DSU campus was placed on lockdown following the slayings and did not end until late Monday night, when DSU president William LaForge tweeted, "#DSUFAMILY, campus lockdown is over. Suspect apprehended. Ethan Schmidt, RIP. Candlelight vigil on Quad Tues at 7pm. Be there. @DeltaState"
