Hollie Cavanagh was challenged to sing a new and an old song on tonight’s episode of ‘American Idol.’ Each contestant was tasked with performing a hit from the 21st century in the first round of performances, and the Top 7 had to do live renditions of soul classics for their second (it was actually modeled after the late Dick Clark‘s program ‘American Bandstand’).

While the Texas native put her heart and soul into the performance, the judges had mixed feelings about her rendition of Underwood’s song.
She’s the tiny girl with the giant voice that leaves everyone tilting their heads and asking, “Where does that come from?” On a night when many contestants have faced criticism, Hollie Cavanagh had to follow contestant Joshua Ledet, who got a three-judge standing ovation and left Jennifer Lopez exclaiming that it was the best thing she’s seen on ‘American Idol‘ — ever.
