‘Weird Al’ Yankovic Earns First No. 1 Album

Who’s laughing now? Three decades into his career, ‘Weird Al’ Yankovic finally has a No. 1 album to his name.

The iconic parody artist debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart with his fourteenth full-length, ‘Mandatory Fun,’ after reportedly selling more than 104,000 copies in its first week. It’s also the first time a comedy album has debuted at No. 1 since Allan Sherman did it in 1963.

The success of the album, which lampoons songs by Lorde (‘Foil‘) and Robin Thicke (‘Word Crimes‘), among others, is largely attributed to the eight videos Yankovic released in eight days. The clips have thus far garnered 46 million cumulative views. Check out his Pixies homage ‘First World Problems’ over at our sister site PopCrush.

Yankovic took to Twitter this morning to thank his fans:

Yankovic already had two previous Top 10 albums on his resume — 2006′s ‘Straight Outta Lynwood’ and 2011′s ‘Alpocalypse’ — but there’s reason to believe ‘Mandatory Fun’ might be his last full-length album.

“I hate to draw lines in the sand and say this is absolutely the last album, but it sure looks that way,” he told the Associated Press. “It’s the end of my record deal. I’ve been under contract since 1982 and I just kind of feel like especially with the kind of music that I do, the album format isn’t the best way to deliver that music… I’m going to try to jump on new hits and new trends as soon as I can (with singles) and try to be a little bit more competitive with everybody else in the world on YouTube.”

‘Mandatory Fun’ is available at iTunes and Amazon.
