The ferocious winds of Hurricane Laura have long since passed South Louisiana by but the carnage and danger left behind by the storm are still lingering. In fact, most of the state's fatalities as related to the hurricane have come during the aftermath and cleanup from the storm.

The Louisiana Department of Health verified over the weekend that there were two more fatalities in the state that could be attributed to circumstances surrounding the storm. In those incidents, a 57-year-old man died as a result of injuries he sustained after he fell from a roof. Meanwhile, another Calcasieu Parish resident reportedly died of carbon monoxide poisoning brought on while using a generator.

The Louisiana Department of Health released details on each of the fatalities.

  • 56-year-old female, Calcasieu Parish, carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator
  • 61-year-old male, Calcasieu Parish, carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator
  • 81-year-old female, Calcasieu Parish, carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator
  • 72-year-old male, Calcasieu Parish, carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator
  • 84-year-old male, Allen Parish, carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator
  • 80-year-old female, Allen Parish, carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator
  • 57-year-old male, Calcasieu Parish, head injury after falling from a roof

As you can see most of the deaths in our state have come from the misuse of generators following the storm. Officials urge you to use those devices with extra caution. It is suggested that generators only be used outside of the home or any other enclosed structure. You should always allow for adequate ventilation too.
