Shreveport police have arrested the father of a baby who was shot in the chest last night at a home in Queensborough.

29-year-old Derrick Wright faces a manslaughter charge in the death of his 19-month-old son, Kayson Wright.

Officers were called to the home on Merwin Street just off of Jewella to a reported shooting.

The toddler had been shot inside the home. The baby had been shot in the chest. He was rushed to Ochsner LSU Hospital where he later died.

Detectives questioned everyone who was at the scene and determined Wright was mishandling the gun when it went off, hitting the baby. The booking sheet says: "Subject advised that he was attempting to clear a rifle when it was discharged, striking victim in the chest killing victim."

The investigation continues.

A 19-month-old baby boy is shot during some sort of incident at a home in West Shreveport. Police were called to the 3900 block of Merwin Street in Queensborough where they found the toddler critically wounded.

The baby had been shot in the chest and was rushed to LSU Oschner Health Shreveport with a wound believed to be life-threatening.

Early indications are that this shooting was accidental but everyone on the scene at the time have been detained for questioning.
