This Saturday, April 24, the Drug Enforcement Agency is celebrating "National Prescription Drug Take Back Day" and Caddo Sheriff Steve Prator will be celebrating as well here on a local level.

As we age, you might note that the list of prescription drugs we take on a regular basis can get longer and longer. Then, on occasion, those prescriptions are changed to something else, or the medication has healed us from the ailment for which it was prescribed.

All too often, those old prescriptions just stay there in our medicine cabinets and some might have expired years ago.  If you've recently thought of ridding yourself of those old medications, the thought might have occurred to you about the proper way to dispose of them?

You never want to just flush them down the toilet or toss them in the trash, but this Saturday will give you the perfect remedy to the situation.

Sheriff Prator says Caddo citizens can dispose of those unwanted prescription drugs this Saturday at Sheriff's Safety Town any time between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm.

The event will be located at 8910 Jewella Avenue at the west end of the Summer Grove parking lot and is free of charge.

Deputies will be on hand to collect and properly dispose of prescription and over-the-counter medications, such as tablets, capsules, and sealed liquids. All identifying information such as name, address, and prescription number should be removed. Intra-venous solutions, injectables, and needles will not be accepted.

“Visiting a Drug Take Back location like the one we provide at Sheriff’s Safety Town is a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of prescription drugs that keeps medications out of the wrong hands and helps eliminate the potential for abuse,” Prator said.

The Sheriff also reminds those that are unable to bring their medications to Safety Town this Saturday, the Sheriff’s Office provides a drop box at Government Plaza, 505 Travis Street, that is open every weekday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm.
