Candyman is The Best Horror Movie Character From Louisiana
There are plenty of horror movies that use Louisiana as a setting. There are even a handful of horror movie characters that call Louisiana home. But how many of those horror movie characters are from Louisiana?
That might be splitting hairs when you look at it, but horror movie fans are known for getting deep into the lore surrounding their favorite franchises. So going down this path is pretty on-brand.
Movies like The Skeleton Key, Hatchet, Antebellum, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Interview with the Vampire, and Cat People are among the horror movies (ok, maybe a stretch on some) that use Louisiana as a setting. But not all of these movies have characters that are explicitly from Louisiana.
Some of these movies, like the Hatchet franchise, do have Louisiana natives in the story. Victor Crowley is the main piece of this franchise, and has become a fan favorite of horror fans...but he's never really broken into mainstream pop culture.
Looking at movies like Interview with the Vampire, where the characters have broken into mainstream, you see characters that are not explicitly from Louisiana. Both Louis de Pointe du Lac and Lestat de Lioncourt are from France.
But when you look at the impact in horror, and the mainstream success, you really only have one option...Candyman.
While the origins of the Clive Barker story aren't based in Louisiana, and the film setting of the original movie is Chicago...the character of Daniel Robitaille is explicitly a Louisiana native.
We don't get all of those explicit details in the first film in 1992, but during the sequel "Farewell to the Flesh" we get all of Robitaille's backstory. In fact, we didn't even get his name until the sequel. According to a story on Candyman from Ranker:
"Surprisingly, not until the second film, Farewell to the Flesh, did he get a name: Daniel Robitaille. The sequel fills in other details, as well: He was born at Esplanade Plantation in New Orleans shortly after the end of the Civil War, meaning he was born either during or very shortly after 1865."
Getting all of the details to fill out the character's background established Candyman as one of the most prolific movie characters from Louisiana.
