Does the Flu Shot Give You the Flu?
Every year around this time, signs pop up at every single store with a pharmacy reminding you to get a flu shot. If you have a doctor's appointment, then you have most likely been reminded in person (ad nauseam) to get your immunization so you don't get the flu.
I always wonder if it will really keep me from getting the flu. As it turns out, the answer is maybe. The shot will help your body build an immunity from some strains of the flu, but not all - so you may still get the strain you aren't protected from. The second question that I hear asked a lot is this: Will this shot give me the flu? While it may feel this way, that's not the case.
According to the CDC, side effects of the flu shot can include soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling where the shot was given. If you haven't gotten it yet, check with your doctor. It's suggested for people from 6 months to 50 years old. Experts predict the flu season to run from late November through March of next year.
