Tragedy for a Louisiana family vacationing in Florida. A 47-year-old St. Martinville man has drowned in the waters off the coast of Destin, Florida.

The man was pulled from the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday morning. He was unconscious. Family members have told the Okaloosa County Sheriff's department he had gone into the water, but disappeared a short time later.

Lifesaving measures were taken, but the EMS crew was not able to revive him. He was pronounced dead a short time later at the emergency room of a Florida hospital.

The Okaloosa County Medical Examiner's Office tells KEEL News the victim has been identified as 47-year-old Buck Barras of St. Martinville.

“Family members say he dove under the water and never resurfaced,” said OCSO Public Information Officer Michele Nicholson. “Lifeguards located him about 75 yards off the beach. They were unable to revive him.”

The call for assistance came in to the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Deputies rushed to the area off of Highway 98 East in Destin.
