According to the report from KATC-TV3, the potentially dangerous airbags in the 'Ford' vehicles caused the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to deny the company's petition from 2017. The petition sought to avoid the recall, but the ruling from the NHTSA means that 3 million vehicles will be recalled.

The report also details the specifics of the defect, saying that ruptured inflators have sent deadly metal fragments into vehicles. This specific defect has resulted in at least 27 deaths worldwide, with 18 of those being in the United States.

The company that made these airbag inflators, 'Takata', have been the subject of roughly 100 million recalls for this defect. The report details that 19 major automakers have had to go through the same recalls in recent years.
