WHAT IS A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE?

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. People located in the center of the Moon’s shadow when it hits Earth will experience a total eclipse. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people in the path of a total solar eclipse can see the Sun’s corona. This outer atmosphere is otherwise usually obscured by the Sun's bright face.

A total solar eclipse is the only type of solar eclipse where viewers can momentarily remove their eclipse glasses (which are not the same as regular sunglasses) for a brief period when the Moon is completely blocking the Sun.

DO I NEED TO WEAR ECLIPSE GLASSES?

Eclipse glasses must be worn whenever there is any visible solar surface. There is one exception, though: avoid using eclipse glasses during the brief moment of "totality," when the moon totally obscures the sun's face, leaving only the bright solar corona.

CAN I MAKE ECLIPSE GLASSES AT HOME?

Don't even attempt; this is a poor concept. Eclipse glasses block out 99.99 percent of the light, which is around a thousand times more than regular sunglasses can block, according to Lisa Ostrin, an optometrist and vision researcher at the University of Houston's College of Optometry.

As per the American Astronomical Society, certain welder's filters can be utilized during an eclipse, but their settings must be adjusted appropriately.

Remember that solar eclipse glasses are made to let you safely gaze at the sun. The filters need to fulfill specific conditions to accomplish that. Looking through those same filters also makes everything appear extremely dark. It's so much so that wearing them while driving drastically impairs your vision.

Sun eclipse glasses are not designed to be used as sunglasses or while operating a motor vehicle. You should not wear them at all when driving as a result of this.
