Does the Full Moon Make Dogs Act Crazy? What to Know
Last night, my dog Olive was acting like a total fool, and absolutely nothing I did could satisfy her.
We had already gone on our usual walk; she went potty, and I even reheated her dinner (yes, I know how crazy that sounds, but dog moms get it!). Still, she was pacing around like she had somewhere to be. Finally, I snapped her leash back on and took her outside for round two. As soon as her paws hit the grass, she started sprinting around like her life depended on it.
I looked up, locked eyes with my friend who was out walking her dog, and she shouted over: "Is Olive freaking out over the full moon, too?"
That was the moment it clicked. Could the full moon really be messing with my dog?
It turns out we're right in the middle of the Full Buck Moon, sitting at nearly 99% illumination. And while moon enthusiasts across the area are gearing up to snap gorgeous photos of the sky tonight, pet parents might be dealing with a whole different kind of lunar energy.
We’ve all heard nurses, first responders, and police officers swear that emergency rooms and shifts get chaotic during a full moon. Science usually chalks that up to confirmation bias, we remember the wild nights when the moon is full and forget the quiet ones. Plus, that extra-bright moonlight can throw off human sleep schedules, making us a little more restless than usual.
But what about our pets?
As it turns out, the full moon can affect animals more than you think. While there’s no magic or mysticism involved, that extra-bright light in the sky completely changes their environment. Because the bright moonlight mimics dawn or dusk, it tricks their internal clocks.
During a full moon, emergency vets actually report a slight bump in visits, and pet parents commonly notice:
Restlessness & Pacing: Trouble settling down or constantly wandering the house.
Extra Noise: Dogs barking more at subtle shadows, or cats vocalizing late into the night.
Late-Night Zoomies: Sudden bursts of high energy because the bright sky tells their brain it’s time to play.
So if your fur baby was acting completely unhinged last night, you’re definitely not imagining it. It’s just the Full Buck Moon doing its thing!
Did your pets lose their minds last night, too?
