Help Needed With Expenses For SPD Officer’s Kidney Transplant

Melanie Loeb has taken to the website GoFundMe to appeal for financial help for a couple of Shreveport area first responders who are very near and dear to her heart.

Those first responders, both 24-years-old, are Destiny Gwin-Phillips and her cousin, Samantha Gwin.

Samantha is a police officer with the Shreveport Police Department and Destiny is a veteran of the Army National Guard, so you can see, these young women have never been afraid to put their lives on the line for others, and now it's our turn to return the favor.

As Melanie writes on GoFundMe, these cousins have been best friends since birth, and the minute it was discovered that Samantha needed help, Destiny let it be known that she was ready, willing and able.

Over the past few years Samantha's kidneys have begun to fail and it was determined she would need a life-saving kidney transplant. As it turns out, Destiny was a perfect match to make that donation and now the surgeries are scheduled for May 28 in Houston, Texas.

It's during that time that these two incredible young women could use the help of all of us in the Shreveport area.

Melanie says, "They will both miss work during this time as the surgery is taking place in Houston and she will have to stay there for 2 weeks. Upon returning back home she will not be able to return to work for an additional 2-4 weeks. The sacrifice is absolutely worth it, however if they could get some help to relieve the stress during an already stressful time it would be GREATLY appreciated. If they don't have to worry about paying their bills during her recovery it will relieve a huge burden from them and allow her to heal properly before returning back to work. ANY donation is greatly appreciated."
